We have a substantial number of veterans on the waiting list from the last couple of flights, and Jeff Miller, the co-founder of Honor Air, was able to secure a significant corporate contribution to enable us to add a second flight.  PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ANTICIPATE THAT THESE WILL BE OUR DISTRICT’S LAST HONOR AIR FLIGHTS. We would like to take 80 to 85 veterans on each flight and increase the number of guardians.

We hope to lower the cost of the flights from the current prices of $300 per veteran and $200 per guardian but won’t know if that’s possible and by how much until we get an initial indication of how many clubs will participate and how many veterans they will sponsor.  It is possible that the cost could be lowered to $200 or $250 per veteran with the guardian cost remaining $200.

The purpose of this email is to determine how many clubs would like to participate in our district’s final Honor Air flights. I ask that you respond to me via email with the following information:

  • Will your club participate?
  • How many veterans will you commit to taking on one of the two flights?
  • How many guardians will you commit to taking on one of the flights?
  • Assuming the cost remains the same ($300 per veteran and $200 per guardian), how many veterans and guardians will you pay for?

Please note that I will update you on the estimated costs and other details within a few days of my receiving responses from our clubs.  I ask that you respond to me via email by February 9th. And as always, feel free to call me if you have any questions or need additional information.

We would like to invite you to participate in a picnic for all veterans in the area that is being hosted by the Rotary Club of Sylva and the Sylva National Guard Armory.  Many other veterans groups will be participating and information booths will be set up for the various organizations to provide information to veterans.

This picnic will be held on November 6 beginning at 1pm at the Sylva National Guard Armory in Webster (Sylva).  We are planning for 250 people to attend this event, and hope that you can join us there.  Friends and family are invited, along with currently serving service members and those who have served in the military at any time in the past.  We should have a good turn out from our WW II veterans from previous Honor Air flights, so you will be able to connect with them at this event as well as meeting more recent veterans.

Donations will be accepted at the door to help defray the cost, with the remainder being used for veterans projects in the area.  Any leftover food will be donated to the Community Table in Sylva to help feed those in need in our community.

]]> http://www.rotary7670.org/veterans-picnic-in-sylva/feed/ 0 Honor Air Clear for Take-off http://www.rotary7670.org/honor-air-flight-set/ http://www.rotary7670.org/honor-air-flight-set/#comments Sun, 03 Oct 2010 03:31:07 +0000 admin http://www.rotary7670.org/?p=1265 On Saturday, October 2nd over 120 WWII Veterans and Rotarian Guardians met for their Pre-Flight meeting in Asheville at the First Baptist Church.  The meeting sets the stage for the Honor Flight on Saturday October 16th.  The trip will be a one day whirl-wind tour of the WWII Memorial and various other sites in our nation’s capitol.

The Flight

The expected departure of the flight will be early in the morning of October 16th from the Asheville Airport (7am arrival).  The Veterans are expected to return in the evening some time after 7pm.

Return Welcome

Rotarians and others are invited to attend the welcome home celebration.  It takes place in the main terminal at the Asheville airport upon the return of the flight.

Saturday, October 16th Asheville Airport
7:00 p.m.  (flight scheduled to return around 7:15 p.m.)

Wear your patriotic colors / Bring a Kleenex as you will probably need it.

For the first time we will try to broadcast some of the day’s events online, Live, via Ustream.  Check back for a revised schedule and some live broadcasts through out the day.

On Saturday, October 3rd Rotarians in District 7670 and our communities gave thanks to over 100 WWII veterans in our District by taking them on the trip of a lifetime to the WWII Memorial in Washington DC.

Clubs, Rotarians and groups district-wide raised money and awareness to make the trip possible.

100 Veterans and approximately 40 Rotarians (who worked to support the Veterans on the physically and emotionally demanding trip) were greeted in Washington DC by a large welcoming committee, Rolling Thunder Bikers, Service-men and women and passers-by.  They visited the WWII, Korean, Vietnam, Lincoln and Marine memorials.  The day was capped off by observing the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery.  Afterwards the veterans returned to Washington National Airport and flew back to Asheville where a large crowd was gathered to welcome them home.
