You are cordially invited to attend the annual District Rotary Foundation Banquet on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Renaissance Hotel in Asheville. Festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a reception for all Rotarians and their guests, followed with dinner at 6:45 p.m. Please join us for an enjoyable evening of fun and great Rotary fellowship in the celebration of the strong involvement of our Rotary clubs in supporting the programs of The Rotary Foundation.

The featured speaker for the evening will be Past Rotary District Governor Joseph M. (Joe) Mulkerrin. Joe is a member of the Rotary Club of Hampton Roads in Virginia and has been a leading voice in our Rotary Zone 33 for The Rotary Foundation, which he serves as the Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator. We are very grateful to Joe and his wife Ann for joining us for this event. To show our support for him and for the work of The Rotary Foundation, we hope that you have marked November 5th on your calendar and are already planning to bring a group of Rotarians from your clubs.

The Host Club Request Form needs to be completed and submitted to Michael Greene not later than Friday, October 14th 2011. We will select the host clubs to participate in the exchange shortly after receiving and reviewing the requests. This is an excellent opportunity for our Rotarians to share our culture, our beautiful sights, and our warm southern hospitality.

The primary focus of each team (inbound and outbound) is on health (how our health system compares with that of Finland); education (how our education system compares to that of Finland Primary School through Graduate Level school); and on Civic leadership (how our city and county managers are coping with providing community services such as fire, police, water and sewage, sanitation, and local education requirements under reduced revenue).

GSE Team Leader Application due to Michael Greene not later than Friday, August 12th 2011 with the GSE Team Leader Interview scheduled for Saturday, August 27th in Asheville.

GSE Team Member Application due to Michael Greene not later than Friday, September 9th 2011 with the GSE Team Member Interviews scheduled for Saturday, September 24th in Asheville.

The Inbound GSE Team from Finland is scheduled to arrive in Asheville on Sunday, April 8th 2012 and scheduled to attend the District Conference in Concord, NC 20-22 April 2012. They will return to Finland departing Asheville Sunday, May 6th 2012.

The outbound GSE Team traveling to Finland will depart Asheville Sunday, April 15th 2012, will attend the District 1430 Conference in Kuopio, Finland 27 – 29 April 2012 and will return to Asheville Sunday, May 6th 2012.

The travel days may be adjusted slightly due to ticketing issues that may arise but for planning purposes, this schedule is fairly firm.

We will all work hard as a District to make sure this GSE experience is productive, enjoyable, fun, and educational for all involved.

Our District 7670 team will exchange with Brazil District 4700 in mid-April 2011 for about four weeks.  Michael Trayford, Rotary Club of Asheville, was selected to lead the Team through an interview process in October.  The team members were selected, as well, in late October. These were individuals in a profession whom you believed would benefit from such an exchange opportunity.  This is a life-changing program of The Rotary Foundation!

We will receive the Brazil team from District 4700 mid-April 2011 through mid-May 2011.  Please consider hosting the visiting team.  This is also a tremendous learning opportunity for members of your club to have the chance to learn about a professional from the area of Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil.  The incoming team will attend our District 7670 Conference, April 29 – May 1, 2011.

Saturday evening the annual District 7670 Foundation Banquet was held in Hickory.  The evening was a great success with heavy attendance and great representation from the whole District.

Keynote

PRIP Frank Devlyn delivered the keynote speech, inspired us to support TRF and also recognized numerous Rotarians for their support of TRF and commitment to Rotary.  In attendance there were numerous special guests including Past RI Director Ken Morgan and his wife Winnie and PDG Mark Markanda.

Introductions

At the Banquet, Frank Dean the current DGNDE was officially presented as well as the Outgoing GSE Team to the Philippines.  Frank Dean gave an enthusiastic preview of his commitment to Rotary and the good works that the Foundation does around the world.  Frank promised a FANTASTIC year and great things to come in District 7670.

Dear DG Carol,

Thank you so much for your email. Messages from districts outside our country are very much appreciated. We can feel your care even if we are miles apart.

What happened was really a catastrophe we never thought will happen to us. Most areas under my district were able to recover in 3 days but areas surrounding us are still in the process of recovering even after one week since the tragic day. Some areas are still under water. Our clubs have been going to these areas and helping any way they can.

All clubs in our district mobilized the day after the storm. Helping any way they can. And we’re not stopping, we will help up to the rehabilitation. Today, Oct 6, is my 45th birthday. The planned celebration cancelled and instead we will be going to a rescue site, bring food for more than 1,000 people and bring relief goods. I will forward to you some emails.

We look forward to knowing more about your GSE team. As for our team, due to the events last week, we have to move our scheduled selection to next week. Will keep you posted.

Dear Team District 3810, “Miraculous things can happen when we join hands to help one another. It isn’t just the good works; it relieves our fear and anxiety, and gives us a new surge of energy.” Rabbi Schonfeld It is just amazing to see that since the height of typhoon Ondoy 7 days ago up to today, Rotarians and Rotary Clubs of District 3810 have not stopped helping any way they can. Since time is of the essence, we did not have a centralized relief operation. Thus, from day 1 Rotarians and Rotary Clubs (Manila/Pasay/Cavite/Mindoro) have quickly responded on their own initiative or working hand in hand with other clubs to give food, water, clothing, medicines and other forms of assistance to the typhoon victims wherever they are needed thus, making our relief operations faster and more effective. And for those who have no specific area to go to, a District relief center was setup with our very energetic, organized always on the go Dep.Gov. Lily Aguilar as OIC & our very supportive SDG Czar Genato providing the place/kitchen/staff in Citimotors, Makati . Since Monday Sept 22, our relief center has been filled with Rotarian and Rotaract volunteers (see write-up emailed by Dep. Gov. Lily) working for several days. Donations from different clubs and individuals have poured in and distributed to where requested. Love, relief and concern for the communities, now more than ever, were witnessed the past week. Understanding that we are all interconnected that when people are hurting or in need, we share the pain and through pulling our resources we help, serve, support and empower those in need – this is the universal law of giving . . . There’s no big or small help. People giving any way they can, with whatever resources they have; working, serving and helping where they are needed with no publicity. Our capacity to reach out and help those in need would grow in the days to come, as we come to see what more is needed to be done to help rehabilitate so many communities. For now, we would like to hear your stories. It is now time to chronicle each act of Rotarians and Rotary Clubs to inspire more to commit to personal acts of service, to celebrate the human spirit and the courage of Filipinos to face any challenge that come our way.
