Let me take you back a few months to the first day of my exchange…It Was September 7th and I didn’t speak a word of Italian. I was sitting in my Rotary counselor Mauro’s office with his good friend (and fellow Rotarian) Lorenza.  While we were waiting for my host parents to come home from work, we were talking (or should I say attempting to talk through ridiculous hand motions seeing as neither one of them spoke English.) I began to show pictures of my home town and where I cam from and they of the travels that they had been on, including what looked to be an incredible trip to Africa just last year.  As I inquired more about this trip I found how incredible it really was; they went on Safari, built a children’s hospital and even hiked Mt. Kilimanjaro! As I became more jealous with each passing second I admitted to them that it has always been one of my life goals to go to Africa and to hike Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Upon saying that Mauro immediately responded with “Vero! Volete venire con noi?” or “Really! Would you like to come with us then?”. I laughed thinking that it was a joke simply taunting me, but when they didn’t laugh back, I realized that they were serious. As I inquired more about this I found that it was actually a Rotary sponsored service trip to Tanzania. I immediately asked Mauro what I had to do to be apart of this incredible experience, but he was already one step ahead of me.

The next week we attended a meeting discussing the details of the trip and I found that Rotary does something truly amazing.  The entire service trip is around three weeks long. We will leave Thursday, December 22 from Milan Malpensa Airport with a flight of Turkish Airlines, we will stop in Istanbul and will arrive in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We will be in Dar es Salaam for three days then we will have the opportunity to visit the city. We will then rent a car and we will be accompanied throughout the journey by a driver. The purpose of this trip is to visit the hospital in which, thanks to the Association Ikelu Pamoja non-profit organization, the Sycamore Rotary Club and many other non-profit organizations, was opened October 7, 2011 and to visit to the “Village Tumaini” which currently houses about 100 orphans. The route from Dar es Salaam to Ikelu will last about 12 hours, where we will see for miles across Africa.

From Ikelu we move to Ruaha National Park, the second largest national park in Tanzania, to do a safari. We will stay 2 daysand will spend New Year’s there. Then return to Ikelu to lend a hand both in the hospital in an orphanage. After our work there is done, we will return on January 9th, 2012. I immediately received permission from both my family in America and Italy and of course my sponsor Rotary club who were all more than excited for me. In just a few days I will begin my regimen of vaccinations (one of the aspects of the trip that I’m not ecstatic about).

I can not tell you all how happy I am for the opportunity that Rotary International has presents me with; I am forever grateful. Thank you to everyone who has helped me thus far in my exchange and I look forward to the other unexpected and life changing experiences that Rotary allows me to have. Thank you all! Grazie mille!

Please find below some information about the Boone Sunrise Rotary TAP (our Intl. project we are raising money for).  We have already found several clubs in the USA as well as our partner in Tanzania that are wanting to join us in helping these families in Tanzania obtain clean water.  We have a goal of $36,000 to bring clean water to 360 families.  If you know any other ways  to get our message out please let me or President Jim Street know.  I’m sure there are other clubs located within our district that would love to participate in our international project.  Please take a moment to click on the links below and to view the YouTube appeal we are making.  I’m not sure the little boy below can wait much longer without impacting his future.

Over the last weekend in July, 160 like-minded Rotarians gathered in Reston Va.(Washington D.C.) for our Annual CaribbeanPartnership Celebration. Our host, Rotary D-7610, did a fantastic job! We had a Caribbean theme throughout the event and manythanks to all the volunteers from the District. Most importantly, this was the first time our Celebration took place in Zone 33.Over the three days, we discussed the Rotary work thatour Partnered Clubs have been doing, evaluated what wehave accomplished, celebrated our achievements anddetermined what needs to be done next. Through thisfellowship with all of us gathered under one roof, therelationships that were already established soared upward to everlasting friendships.We have grown significantly to include all 29 districts of Zones 33 and 34 plusassociate members outside of our Zones. The main body of our membership is ourPartnered Clubs; we currently have over four hundred Clubs of the USA, and theIsland Districts of the Caribbean and N. Atlantic, D-7000, D-7020, & D-7030,partnered and doing Rotary’s work together.

SUBJECT:      Nominations for 2014-2015 District Governor

Dear Club and District Leaders:

District Governor Bill Parker has requested that I contact each club and issue a call for nominations for District Governor to serve during the Rotary year of 2014-2015. Guidelines for these nominations are outlined in Article XIII of the RI Bylaws, which can be found on pages 224-229 in the 2007 Manual of Procedure. Following is the schedule that has been established by our District in accordance with the Rotary District 7670 Leadership Plan to meet Rotary International District Governor nomination requirements:

August 1, 2011: Official notice to all clubs inviting them to submit suggestions for the office of District Governor at the District Office address for consideration by the District Nominating Committee. This letter will serve as that “Official Notice.”

September 30, 2011: Deadline for receipt of club resolutions, suggesting candidates for the office of District Governor for consideration by the District Nominating Committee. Suggestions shall be submitted in the form of a resolution adopted at a regular club meeting, naming the suggested candidate, said resolution being certified by the club secretary. Clubs must use the enclosed Form H (4 pages). Clubs should submit this form to reach District Nominating Committee Chair Ed Walcoff by no later than September 30, 2011. Also, please give your candidate a copy of the enclosed “Guidelines for District Elections.”

District Governor candidate interviews will be held on Friday, October 14, 2011, at the District Office (31 College Place, Building D-312) in Asheville.  Candidates must personally appear before the Nominating Committee on this day.

The selection committee is composed of 11 voting members.  They are five Past District Governors (Efland, Troutman, Aydelotte, Shillito, Sink) and six immediate past club presidents.  The club presidents are: Jennifer Dirkes (Sylva), Kimmie Rogers (Caldwell County), Jodie Cook (Highlands), Duncan Greenlee (Highlands-Mountaintop), Bob DeCamara, (Boone-Sunrise) and Dietra Dula (Hickory-Sunrise).  Non-voting members of the committee are:  DG Bill Parker, DGE Frank Dean, and DGN Ronnie Thompson.

In summary, your clubs are invited to suggest candidates for District Governor for 2014-2015 and submit their names to me no later than September 30, 2011.  The name of the candidate and related information must be submitted on the Governor-Nominee Data Form, (Form H–4 pages) which is enclosed. The candidate proposed by his/her club must appear in person for the interview by the Nominating Committee on October 14, 2011 in order to be considered.  Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information or assistance.

Duties of District Governor

Excerpts from the Rotary International Manual of Procedure

GOVERNOR

The governor is the officer of RI in the district, functioning under the general control and supervision of the Board. The administration of clubs in a district is under the governor’s direct supervision. The governor is charged with the duty of furthering the Object of Rotary by providing leadership and supervision of the clubs in the district. The governor shall inspire and motivate them and ensure continuity within the district. (RIB 15.090.) In order to assure the best possible candidates for the office of governor, the governors shall invite the clubs in their districts to propose suitable candidates.

Status, Qualifications, and Duties

The following statement of the governor’s status, qualifications, and duties is distributed annually to all clubs in order to inform those proposed for nomination as governors or making such proposals of the obligations of the office.

Status

The governor is an officer of RI nominated by the clubs of a district and elected by the convention of RI. The governor’s term of office begins on 1 July and continues for one year or until a successor is elected and qualified. (RIB 6.060.1.)

Qualifications

In addition to the qualifications of governor-nominee, a governor, at the time of taking office, must have completed seven years of membership in one or more clubs and have attended the governors-elect training seminar and International Assembly. (RIB 15.080.)

Duties

The governor is charged with the duty of furthering the Object of Rotary by providing leadership and supervision of the clubs in the district. The governor should work with district and club leaders to encourage participation in the District Leadership Plan. The governor is responsible for the following activities in the district:

1) Organizing new clubs

2) Strengthening existing clubs

3) Promoting membership growth by working with district leaders and club presidents to establish realistic membership goals for each club in the district

4) Supporting The Rotary Foundation through program participation and financial contributions

5) Promoting cordial relations among clubs and between the clubs and RI governance and promote an ethical image. Adhering to these policies demonstrates a commitment to these ideals while protecting the association.

4) Governors will serve for the benefit of Rotarians and the purposes of RI. Governors should put the interests of the district first and avoid even the appearance of any impropriety as to their actions and conduct.

5) Governors will not utilize their office for personal prestige and/or benefit or for the benefit of members of their family. With the authority inherent in an office of importance comes access to special privileges not available to other Rotarians. Taking advantage of such privilege distracts from critical responsibilities and calls into question the commitment to the Objects of Rotary.

6) Governors will exercise due care in the diligent performance of their obligations to the district. Governors should perform their responsibilities with such care, including reasonable inquiry, as ordinarily prudent persons in like positions would use under similar circumstances. Governors should inform themselves, prior to making a business decision, of all material information reasonably available to them.

7) Governors will take actions based on an essential fairness to all concerned. Governors are often faced with decisions that will significantly impact various Rotary clubs and individuals. Governors, in a manner consistent with The Four-Way Test, should weigh the potential impact of their decisions and treat equally all persons who will be affected.

8- Governors will promote transparency of important financial information. Governors are the stewards of the association acting on behalf of Rotary clubs and Rotarians. Rotarians have a right to access accurate information

regarding the financial condition of the association. Transparency in financial operations encourages ethical behavior.

9) Governors will prohibit and restrict the disclosure, communication, and utilization of confidential and proprietary information. Governors should utilize this information only for intended purposes, never for personal ones, and take precautions against accidental disclosure.

10) Governors will comply with expense reimbursement policies. The RI Board has adopted a policy on the procedures for reimbursement of Rotary-related expenditures. Following these procedures ensures compliance with applicable laws.

19.020.7. District Governor Code of Ethics

1. Governors will adhere to applicable laws and regulations while conducting Rotary business. In addition, in conducting their private lives, governors will adhere to applicable laws in order to preserve and protect the positive image of Rotary.

2. Governors will adhere to the provisions of the RI Constitution and Bylaws. These documents embody the democratic will of Rotary’s membership as represented at the triennial Council on Legislation; through them, the membership has established standards expected of Rotary officers. Adherence to their terms garners the trust of the membership and ensures that actions are consistent with members’ expectations.

3. Governors will adhere to the provisions established by the RI Board as documented in the Rotary Code of Policies. Over the years, the Board has established policies and procedures to further the aims of the association and protect its mission. Many of these provisions are designed to ensure good governance and promote an ethical image. Adhering to these policies demonstrates a commitment to these ideals while protecting the association.

19.030.1. Selection of Governor-nominee

The selection by the clubs in a district of a governor-nominee should be conducted in a dignified, responsible manner in harmony with the principles of Rotary. Districts should seek out and nominate for the office of district governor the best qualified person. District nominating committees are encouraged to interview all candidates for governor, whether they are suggested by clubs or by the nominating committee. Each interview of governor-nominee candidates should satisfy the following minimum needs:

a. verify that each candidate meets the formal requirements for nomination, in accordance with RI Bylaws sections 15.070. and 15.080

b. clarify the specific duties that a governor requires, including knowledge, experience, time, and fiscal resources

c. allow an overall summary of each candidate’s qualifications and suitability

d. enable each candidate to reveal her or his intentions and ambitions. (November 2007

Guidelines for District Elections

A fundamental principle of Rotary is that the best qualified candidate should be selected for service in elective offices.  The RI Bylaws prohibit any effort by a candidate, a candidate’s supporter, or any Rotarian to influence the selection process in a positive or negative manner, including but not limited to campaigning or canvassing.  The RI Board developed these guidelines to assist Rotarians in better understanding election procedures:

For All Rotarians

• Review and comply with RI’s election guidelines as explained in the following documents:

Especially for Candidates

• Do not respond in a similar manner to another candidate’s improper activities.
• Do not communicate with or visit clubs involved in the election, except to fulfill necessary functions.  If there are any concerns that a current assignment or a new assignment may give an appearance of campaigning, consult with the district governor.  Routine performance of assigned activities is not a violation of Rotary’s election policies.

The Award was created to recognize outstanding active personal service since 1 November 1992.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

SERVICE AWARD FOR A POLIO-FREE WORLD

Criteria and Guidelines

Purpose of the Award: This award was established by the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation in order to recognize outstanding contributions to the effort by Rotarians and thereby to encourage final efforts.

Service to be Recognized: Active personal service is required by the prospective recipient of the award.  Personal financial contributions, however noteworthy, are not a basis for the award.  Outstanding service in the field of advocacy, however, is not precluded as a consideration for the award.  Fundraising efforts that support Rotary’s PolioPlus program may be considered in the evaluation of nominees for the award.

Period of Service: Since the service to be recognized relates to the eradication target phase of Rotary efforts, only service which has occurred since 1 November 1992 is recognizable.

Number and Distribution of Awards: Regional awards, with regions coinciding with WHO regions, for outstanding service in polio eradication, solely or primarily with the region, will be made annually, not to exceed ten per region.  International Awards, for broad service to the cause of polio eradication, will also be made annually, not to exceed ten individuals.  A Rotarian may receive only one of each award.  Prior receipt of a regional award is not a condition, nor does it preclude, consideration for the international award.

Persons Eligible: Any Rotarian is eligible except:

1. Current and incoming trustees of The Rotary Foundation, current and incoming directors of Rotary International, and current and incoming district governors are not eligible to receive either of these awards.
2. Members of a Regional PolioPlus Committee and any Rotarian who have previously received either the regional or international award are ineligible for the regional award.
3. Members of the International PolioPlus Committee are ineligible for either award.

Award Approval: Regional awards will be made by the Trustee Chairman upon recommendation by the International PolioPlus Committee, which may consider the views of appropriate regional committees.  If there is no regional committee, the Trustee Chairman will appoint a Rotarian in the WHO Region to execute the regional committee responsibilities in this regard.  International awards will be made only by the Executive Committee of the Trustees upon recommendation by the IPPC.

Any Rotarian may initiate a recommendation for a Rotarian to receive either award.

The cost for all the spaces is $150.  This is a better rate than I got from the colleges in the area.  It is also a space our district has used the past several years for our district foundation banquet. Lunch will be provided by the catering manager at the hotel and will be better than a box lunch.

Hotel rooms for those arriving the night before can be reserved for $64.  This is a special RLI room rate.
I have developed a flier for Governor Bill Parker to take on his official visits to the clubs and will hand them out at our district foundation meeting this Saturday in Asheville. I still have the RLI display we used at the district conference in Knoxville last May and will have that on display this Saturday at the foundation meeting.  Also, I plan to mail the handbill to all the club presidents with a letter asking them to promote the event.

I am working on a restaurant for the faculty dinner.
